Mungo NP Trip Day 11 - West Wyalong to Wagga Wagga

After some deliberation last night about the torrential rain in Sydney and to the west we decided to head south to the Hume Highway for our journey home to try and avoid the worst of it. In so doing we have been able to see some of the things we missed on our way west and to revisit some things we had seen.

Our first stop was Temora which is a fabulous little town which we both loved. There was a great little fabric shop and we had morning tea at the bakery on the roundabout after a walk down the main street. Unfortunately all the photos have come in in reverse order which we'll all have to cope with.

Some of the buildings and shop fronts were fantastic and showed the age of the town.

The antique shop cum bric-a-brac shop had some great barbed wire sculptures so I have included one here as inspiration for Chookyblue.

Then we turned south west to Coolamon which we had bypassed on the way west because the road does not go through the town. We walked the main street again and I then realised that I had been here on one of my Vintage Rail trips. Our aim here this time was to visit Coolamon cheese and I bought lots. They even boxed it in a poly box and gave us some complimentary crackers and fig paste.

Coolamon Station

Another lovely little town with amazing, well-kept buildings and shop fronts.

On the road again, retracing our westward steps by travelling east to Junee to revisit the Licorice and Chocolate factory and have some lunch. Again, a beautiful meal.

We then headed south again and found the Information Centre. This is in the Museum which is part of the Civic precinct with art galleries and the library and all along the Murrumbidgee River.

This beautiful sea horse was in the National Art Glass Gallery.

We walked along the boardwalk for a little way

We then decided to find a motel for the night. After two tries we found the Quality Inn Carriage House on the road out to the east which we need to take tomorrow.

Our room looks out onto a huge grassed area and we spent the afternoon watching various birds feeding - Crimson Rosellas, Sacred Ibis, Plover, Kookaburra, Galahs and others that come in and out. The one below is probably a Green Rosella.

We also kept an eye on the clouds building a little in the north and watching the weather updates along the Western Highways that we did not take.

Much of the evening was spent watching the progress of the sunset. It was a beauty.

  1. Aren’t little country towns the best to explore, usually providing unexpected treasures. It’s ages since we have been down that way, so we should go again some time.
