20 May 2023 - Cobar to White Cliffs
Today it was another cold morning to wake up to. We donned all our warm gear and at 7am headed 2 blocks down to AyJay's Cafe who had opened early for us. I enjoyed pancakes for breakfast and they were great and freshly made. Kerrie and I had bought socks at the Royal Flying Doctor Base yesterday so decided to wear them today.
On the road again clouds began to come and go. During our drive today we saw lots of saltbush, emus, hundreds of goats, a Wedgetail Eagle and 2 feral pigs.
We had a morning coffee at Emmdale Roadhouse then drove on to Wilcannia where we had a short time to stretch our legs while we looked at the old bridge over the Darling River.
Then we headed north to White Cliffs. We had a lovely lunch at Red Earth Opal Cafe and showroom then, Michael took us for a little tour of White Cliffs.
Back to the Red Earth Cafe where, after a talk about the 'pineapple' opals Graham was mining there, we went for a tour down into the Red Earth Opal mine. This was a really interesting time and as Graham had dug most of the mine himself he was able to tell us where he found some of the opals he had shown us in the showroom and demonstrated how he does his mining.
We checked into the White Cliffs Hotel/Motel at about 5:30pm. We had donga accommodation which was very comfortable but very cold during the night. I suppose I could have closed the window! The owners had not expected us for dinner but supplied us with a choice of beef schnitzel or battered fish with chips and salad. This was followed by apricots and ice-cream. It was all delicious and simple.
